Ottawa – September 29, 2015: The Ottawa Geek Market, the National Capital Region’s largest geek festival, will be returning to the Nepean Sportsplex, October 3rd and 4th, and will be running in conjunction with the Capital Gaming Expo, the city’s largest gaming event.

“When the Geek Market started, it was as much about celebrating geek culture as it was about supporting local vendors and artisans,” says Lindsay Sherman, Vice President of the Ottawa Geek Market. “We’re so pleased that people have embraced this idea, and keep coming back for more!”

The festival promises fun for the entire family, with activities ranging from a LEGO play area and a costume contest, to dance performances, panels, workshops and the return of Geek Quest, a geeky scavenger hunt for children and adults alike. This year, the Geek Market will also feature special guests, including local YouTubers, comic book artists, and Andrew Ivimey, creator of the Internet-sensation Texts from Superheroes.

It also marks the launch of the Ottawa Geek Market Arts Scholarship, where three local students will be awarded $1,000 in the areas of sculpture, traditional art, and costuming.

“We are proud to be running both the Geek Market and its sister event the Capital Gaming Expo this weekend,” says Ms. Sherman. “If you’re a gamer you’re going to love this event. We’ll have everything from video and board gaming, to role playing games, miniatures and even some LARPing. And the best part? You get two events for the price of one!”

The October festival will be the sixth installment of the National Capital Region’s largest geek festival which continues to grow in size and popularity. Since its inception in 2012, the festival has proudly raised more than $26,000 for local charities, donated more than $14,000 in admission tickets, and welcomed 15,800 patrons.

The Capital Gaming Expo (formerly Game Summit) is the region’s first large-scale gaming convention. The event offers a wide variety of gaming experiences and is open to all levels of gamers from all walks of life.

The first official Capital Gaming Expo took place this past March as part of the Ottawa Geek Market and hosted over 2,500 gamers. In April of this year, the Geek Market purchased Game Summit an event that has been taking place annually since 2008 and brought in over 1,500 participants at its height.

Building on Game Summit’s tradition of providing a convention to play and celebrate tabletop gaming, the Capital Gaming Expo will be hosting events for video games, board games , tabletop RPGs (role-playing games), collectible card games (CCGs), living card games (LCGs), miniatures and LARPing (live action role-playing).
