Board Gaming Convention
Board gamers! Our friends at Meeples to Go are running a mini-board gaming convention the weekend of our event in Rink 3, and man do they have some cool games in store for you! They’ll be offering a free board gaming library, free demos, and free tournaments (see below for more information). Access to the convention is free with your Ottawa Geek Market ticket, and there will be tons of prizes to be won.
In fact, the more you play, the more FREE prizes you’ll get. Here’s how it’ll work:
- Check a game out of the library = 5 tokens
- Check out a game demo = 10 tokens
- Play in a tournament = 20 tokens
- Win a tournament = 100 tokens
Once you’re done playing, bring your tokens downstairs to our Prize Redemption booth at the front of the Curling Rink and “buy” the free prizes that tempt you the most. If you don’t have enough tokens you can pay the difference with cash.
Board Gaming Library
Check out a board game, like a book at a library, and play to your hearts content. They’ll have some volunteers to help you navigate a wide selection of family, party, strategy and euro games, and get you playing.

Description: Ancient civilizations have left us many wonders to marvel at. Have you ever wanted to join their ranks and leave a legacy for generations to come?
In 7 Wonders you and your opponents will take turns drafting cards in order to build the perfect civilization. Each turn you will add a card to your tableau, paying for them with the resources that your or your neighbours have cultivated. The game is played over 3 “Ages” at the end of which players will total up their points. The player with the most points has built the greatest civilization and is the winner of the game! Base game rules, Leaders Expansion rules, Cities Expansion rules.
Tournament format: Our 7 Wonders tournament will be played over 2 rounds of 45 minutes each. Only the base game will be used, no expansions or promos. The first round will be 2 games of 7 players. The top 2 players from each of those games will move onto the finals, as well as a randomly drawn player.
The winner of the final 5 player game will be awarded a fantastic prize!
Description: Introduced by the Moors, azulejos (originally white and blue ceramic tiles) were fully embraced by the Portuguese when their king Manuel I, on a visit to the Alhambra palace in Southern Spain, was mesmerized by the stunning beauty of the Moorish decorative tiles. The king, awestruck by the interior beauty of the Alhambra, immediately ordered that his own palace in Portugal be decorated with similar wall tiles. As a tile-laying artist, you have been challenged to embellish the walls of the Royal Palace of Evora.
In the game Azul, players take turns drafting colored tiles from suppliers to their player board. Later in the round, players score points based on how they’ve placed their tiles to decorate the palace. Extra points are scored for specific patterns and completing sets; wasted supplies harm the player’s score. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.
Tournament format: This tournament will take place over 2 rounds of 45 minutes each. The first round will consist of 12 players, playing 3 4-player games. The second round will be a single 4 player game. This game’s participants will be the winners of the previous games, plus one player drawn at random.
The overall winner will be awarded a prize from Meeples to Go’s fabulous prize selection!
Description: Exploding Kittens is a kitty-powered version of Russian Roulette. Players take turns drawing cards until someone draws an exploding kitten and loses the game. The deck is made up of cards that let you avoid exploding by peeking at cards before you draw, forcing your opponent to draw multiple cards, or shuffling the deck.
The game gets more and more intense with each card you draw because fewer cards left in the deck means a greater chance of drawing the kitten and exploding in a fiery ball of feline hyperbole.
Tournament format: This zany adventure will take place over 5, 20 minute rounds. For the first 4 rounds players will participate in intense 5 player games, trying to survive the longest, in order to earn the most points. The first player to be eliminated in a game will earn 1 point, the second will earn 2, third 3, etc. By the 5th round we’ll take the 5 players with the highest point totals, and they’ll face off in a fur-flying battle royale!
The winner of this finale will be the kitty champion, and walk away with a wonderful prize!
TICKET TO RIDE
Description: Grab your trains and plan your routes as you strive to be a turn-of-the-century rail tycoon!
Ticket to ride is an exciting game of set collecting and route building. On a player’s turn they may either draw new cards into their hand, or play sets of cards in order to claim routes on the map. Full rules available here.
Tournament format: Ticket to Ride will be played over 2 rounds, each with a maximum play time of 1 hour. The first round will consist of 3 games with 5 players. The final round will have the winner from each of the previous games face off in an intense 3 player game of railroad supremacy.
The winner of this game will be a champion and be awarded with an amazing prize!
DEAD OF WINTER
Dead of Winter is a meta-cooperative psychological survival game. This means players are working together toward one common victory condition — but for each individual player to achieve victory, he must also complete his personal secret objective. This secret objective could relate to a psychological tick that’s fairly harmless to most others in the colony, a dangerous obsession that could put the main objective at risk, a desire for sabotage of the main mission, or (worst of all) vengeance against the colony! Certain games could end with all players winning, some winning and some losing, or all players losing. Work toward the group’s goal, but don’t get walked all over by a loudmouth who’s looking out only for his own interests!
LORDS OF WATERDEEP
Waterdeep, the City of Splendors – the most resplendent jewel in the Forgotten Realms, and a den of political intrigue and shady back-alley dealings. In this game, the players are powerful lords vying for control of this great city. Its treasures and resources are ripe for the taking, and that which cannot be gained through trickery and negotiation must be taken by force!
MANSIONS OF MADNESS
Mansions of Madness: Second Edition is a fully cooperative, app-driven board game of horror and mystery for one to five players that takes place in the same universe as Eldritch Horror and Elder Sign. Let the immersive app guide you through the veiled streets of Innsmouth and the haunted corridors of Arkham’s cursed mansions as you search for answers and respite. Eight brave investigators stand ready to confront four scenarios of fear and mystery, collecting weapons, tools, and information, solving complex puzzles, and fighting monsters, insanity, and death. Open the door and step inside these hair-raising Mansions of Madness: Second Edition. It will take more than just survival to conquer the evils terrorizing this town.
In Small World, players vie for conquest and control of a world that is simply too small to accommodate them all.
Designed by Philippe Keyaerts as a fantasy follow-up to his award-winning Vinci™, Small World is inhabited by a zany cast of characters such as dwarves, wizards, amazons, giants, orcs and even humans; who use their troops to occupy territory and conquer adjacent lands in order to push the other races off the face of the earth.
Picking the right combination from the 14 different fantasy races and 20 unique special powers, players rush to expand their empires – often at the expense of weaker neighbors. Yet they must also know when to push their own over-extended civilization into decline and ride a new one to victory!
In the most distant reaches of the world, magic still exists, embodied by spirits of the land, of the sky, and of every natural thing. As the great powers of Europe stretch their colonial empires further and further, they will inevitably lay claim to a place where spirits still hold power – and when they do, the land itself will fight back alongside the islanders who live there.
In the 2400s, mankind begins to terraform the planet Mars. Giant corporations, sponsored by the World Government on Earth, initiate huge projects to raise the temperature, the oxygen level, and the ocean coverage until the environment is habitable. In Terraforming Mars, you play one of those corporations and work together in the terraforming process, but compete for getting victory points that are awarded not only for your contribution to the terraforming, but also for advancing human infrastructure throughout the solar system, and doing other commendable things.
