OTTAWA – The Ottawa Geek Market is coming back to the Nepean Sportsplex March 1st and 2nd with a few surprises in store for patrons. The family-friendly event will provide guests the opportunity to shop, dress up in costume, and indulge in all things geeky, while also raising money for the Royal Ottawa Foundation for Mental Health. That’s four ways to beat the winter blues in one location!
“Each event we’ve held supported a different charity and had a different theme. It just made sense to us to focus on mental health this time around since it affects us all, especially this time of year” said Stacey Young, Co-Founder of the Ottawa Geek Market. “The Geek Market is a celebration of Ottawa’s thriving geeky community, and we’re proud that we can help out such a great cause while also promoting local exhibitors, artisans and fan clubs.”
This will be the third instalment of the National Capital Region’s largest geeky flea market which continues to grow in size and popularity. Since its inception in 2012, the event has proudly raised more than $5,000 for charity and seen over 5,200 patrons, many of whom come in costume.
The two-day shopping experience will feature more than 40 exhibitors selling items including comic books, art, clothing, jewellery, books, toys, collectibles, video games, and board games. If you’re in to sci-fi, fantasy, steampunk, horror, anime, gaming or cosplay, then this is the place to shop.
The event will also host giant board games and a silent auction including a Zelda Wii U deluxe set, handmade medieval shield, vintage-style popcorn machine, and so much more. LEGO fans will also enjoy the huge LEGO display, a LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 available for bidding at the silent auction, and a massive mini-figure inventory clear-out at the Geek Etc. booth.
Two dollars from each ticket and 100 per cent of the money raised at the silent auction will be donated to The Royal.
Admission is $10 a day (children 12 and under get in for free) or $15 for a weekend pass. Tickets can only be purchased at the door. The event runs from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday March 1st, and from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Sunday March 2nd.
Media accreditation is available at the Ottawa Geek Market website at http://geekmarket.ca/media/. All applications must be received by February 24th by 4 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
