WHO ARE WE?
The Ottawa Geek Market is a local festival run by fans FOR fans. That’s right! We’re a volunteer-run organization made up of local geeks who are super passionate about your favourite fandoms, including Harry Potter, the Avengers, Overwatch, and Settlers of Catan.
It’s important to us to create a safe, family-friendly, and welcoming environment for our patrons where they can geek out to their hearts content, no matter their walk of life. Even though our event isn’t tiny, we really do feel as though our patrons are part of our geeky family.
ABOUT THE EVENT
Our events regularly welcome 7-8,000 patrons, over 100 awesome exhibitors, and some of the best cosplayers in Canada. We also proudly host some of the most fun (and sometimes cheesy) activities. Join us at our kid-friendly event. You won’t be dissapointed!
With a focus on sci-fi, fantasy, comics, anime, steampunk, horror and gaming, there’s bound to be something for every geek in your life when you attend a Geek Market event!
WHAT WE’VE ACCOMPLISHED SO FAR
Since our inception we’ve proudly donated more than $67,000 back into our community, and welcomed more than 46,000 patrons.
Please see this page for more information about our past events including attendance numbers and list of special guests, and our Charitable Giving page for a list of which charitable organizations we’ve supported.
A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Ottawa Geek Market was founded in the summer of 2012 by Stacey Young and Karen Fraser. Both ladies shared a passion for all things LEGO and board gaming and thought it’d be fun to run a small flea market style event each fall. They established the event with three main goals in mind: 1) to provide local geeky artisans, vendors and shopkeepers with an opportunity to sell their awesome items, 2) to celebrate the thriving geeky community in Ottawa in a fun and safe environment, and 3) to donate as much money as we can to local charities.
But as they quickly learned, the event was never destined to be small. In fact the first event welcomed over 2,100 in just one day! Since then the event has expanded into a full fledged geeky festival (and a proud member of Ottawa Festivals) where patrons can shop while also celebrating their favourite geeky fandoms though entertainment, video and board gaming, and family-friendly activities such as scavenger hunts, escape rooms, and cosplay (wearing costumes).
The activities component of the event became so popular that the management team founded the Capital Gaming Expo (now called the Canadian Gaming Expo) to be run in conjunction with Geek Market events. The team also founded the Geek and Gaming Garage Sale, to help provide local geeks with a big event where they could sell from their personal collections. But as time passed, the Geek Market grew so big that the team decided it needed to focus it’s attention on the original event. In 2016, the Capital Gaming Expo was sold to its new owner, and in 2017, the Geek and Gaming Garage Sale was sold to the Geek Market’s new show manager (so don’t worry, it’s still in the family and run by the same team).
The future is looking bright for the event, and there are plans in place for expansion. You’ll see. 😉
